Cartagena is searching for new Ocean Challenges

INSCRIPCIÓN

The Cartagena Oceanographic Research Institute (CORI) is now gathering proposals from citizens and society in the face of the challenge of ensuring the existance of such an important resource, the oceans, for future generations. These proposals will be carried out during 48 hours on the Ocean Hackaton.

The event, which will take place from 9th to 11th October at the 'Student's house' from the Technical University of Cartagena (UPCT), will become a laboratory of ideas so as to develop innovative proposals trough technology for ocean protection.

The sessions will be celebrated simultaneously at other 18 coastal cities from all around the world, with the same objective: optimizing measurement and diagnostic resources to improve the oceans, one of the activities considered by the UNESCO for the oceanographic sciences for a sustainable ocean decade .

Legal and natural persons can participate to send their challenges. These can come from simple ideas, necessities of sea users or other projects, which may be more mature or need extra improvement. The deadline to send the proposals end on the following 30th June on the webpage (https://oceanhackaton.cori.institute/).

A researchers committee coming from different fields and coordinated by the Cartagena Oceanographic Research Institute (CORI) will be in charge of selecting the most interesting and innovative proposals which will be nominated as challenges for the multidisciplinary teams (oceanography, programming, design, bussiness...) during the three days of the Ocean Hackaton.

The city of Cartagena together with the rest of locations (Mexico, Deshaies, Rimouski, Cardiff, St Malo, Le Havre, Boulogne, Champs, Tolulon, Sète, Castellón, Cádiz, St Jean de la Luz, La Rochelle, Brest, Nantes, Ancona and Split) will become the world capital for ocean scientific-technical research, since during 48 hours challenges will be developed with the aim of optimizing technical solutions, such as tools for early detection of invasive species, the enhancement of the submerged historical heritage or the survival of marine ecosystems.

Cartagena will be at the core of oceanographic research thanks to the collaboration from companies and institutions such as the Technical University of Cartagena (UPCT), the Cartagena Porth Authority (APC), The Confederation of Business Organizations of Cartagena (COEC), Europe Direct Región de Murcia and the company INNOVA Oceanografía Litoral. All of them are sponsors aligned with the Blue growth strategy impulsed by the European Union for a suistainable exploitation of the oceans, and with the ocean care and protection inside the Sustainable Development Goals from the 2030 Agenda.

Besides, we will invite to participate a team coming from the asociation Talento STEM, completely formed by little girls with the objective of supporting from CORI the task they develop for the encouragement of STEM careers and direct that potential towards ocean research.
