The Cartagena Oceanographic Research Institute (CORI) has open the registration period for the Ocean Hackathon 2020 which will take place at the city of Cartagena from 9th until 11th October with the aim to come up with new scientific-technical tools so as to help to improve the sustainabilty of the ocean and marine ecosystems.
The facilities from the Technical University of Cartagena (UPCT) will host for the first time in Spain this event, where the selected aims for the improvement of the sustainability of the ocean will be developed. A total of nine teams formed of professionals or students from various disciplines such as oceanography, biology, engineering, robotics or design will be in charge of developing different technological applications which will implement data collecting or the channels to transmit this information among both the scientific community and society.
Registrations can be sent until the next 7th October on https://site.evenium.net/byxkb8z9/registration by a fee of 10 euros which includes allowances and materials for the development of this scientific activity during 48 hours.
The co-founder and project manager from CORI,Francisco López Castejón, has encouraged everyone to register on this call, sinceit is a great opportunity to contribute to improve the seas and enhance the value of themarine ecological heritage from the region of Murcia. López Castejón has stated that, among the nine challenges which will be developed during 48 hours of marine research, there are some special ones such as geotracking seahorses, the improvement of divers' security during immersions, recycling of oceanographic buoys or the study on the impact of anchoring over thePosidonia oceánica.
Among the institutions which have participated on the proposals of challenges, some can be highlighted such as the Technical University of Cartagena (UPCT), the University of Murcia (UMU), Association Hippocampus, the company Diveapp or collectives such as the the one of divers from Cabo de Palos or Talento STEM. Nine challenges selected in Cartagena will join more than 200 proposals which have been presented at another 16 cities all around the world, which will be simultaneously hosting the fifth edition of this event, in which Spain is participating for the first time.
The Ocean Hackathon 2020 organized by CORI stands for the scientific and technical talent from the region of Murcia and the update of the advances on the field of sustainable development and ocean protection. For the first time, the city of Cartagena will become during 48 hours a reference for oceanographic innovation together with the rest of cities all around the world which are participating participantes thanks to the sponsorship from entities such as the Technical University of Cartagena (UPCT), Europe Direct Región de Murcia, Innova Oceanografía Litoral, Navantia and SABIC, and from collaborators such as the Cartagena Porth Authority, SAES, Primafrio, COEC, Talento STEM and the CEEIC of Cartagena.
